“Remember that you must die.”
As a student of Stoic philosophy, this phrase comes up a great deal in my reading. It may seem morbid to some but I find great comfort and inspiration in the concept. Marcus Aurelius wrote in Mediations “You could leave life right now; let that determine what you say and do and think.” Death is the great leveller, and reminding myself of its inevitability helps me to sort out what matters from trivial bullshit that ultimately does not matter. What a beautiful life it can be when you let that shit go.
This is an 8 colour screen print. The circular astronomical graph is printed in a shimmering gold. The design is a collage created from my own drawing and scans of vintage anatomical and botanical illustrations.

“Remember, you must live.”
For some, the idea of Memento Mori feels too heavy, too dark. The weight of your own death is often a heavy burden. Memento Vivere takes the same concept but casts a different light upon it. It is a reminder that while you must carefully hold the tension that it exists between the brevity of life and the gift that it is to live it.
This is a 9 colour silkscreen print. The large astronomy chart behind is a shimmering gold. The design was created as a collage of my own drawing and scans of vintage anatomical and botanical drawings.

A self-portrait for us all, this piece speaks to the inner wild soul. Much of being a modern human is about existing adjacent to nature and the universe. We feel above it, outside of it, even foolishly daring to be in control of it. In reality, we are just more atoms bouncing around within it. Brains and guts and bones moving about in a larger, ancient system, subject to its processes and whims. It’s nice to see yourself as a wild thing once and a while.

For me, creating surreal collage is a wonderful creative exercise with no end goal except to play until it feels done. I do it often as a creative warm up. Sometimes the results are pretty interesting and worth evolving into a piece. All this print has to say is “hey, you little weirdo, just keep doing your best. Find other little weirdos and live your weird beautiful life.”

“The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself.”
-Carl Sagan
I love this idea and explore it often in my work. Our bodies are composed of ancient elements from distant space that weave a thread through all things. It’s a gigantic thought and I take great comfort in being a spec of dust within it. It makes traffic and email and taxes feel like nothing at all.

Beyond this golden window frame lies a rich and varied landscape, waiting for you. But the beauty in existence and the vastness of the universe is easily forgotten. Bogged down by work and tasks and consumption, we rarely get to exist without serving a higher productive function. The time to wander and to rest is a precious thing.
